Food For Education Partnered With Rippleworks To Build On Their Culture of Quality and Efficiency

There are 500 M primary aged children in Africa. Only 30-40% of these children get the recommended daily intake (RDI) of calories each day and ~25% of kids are permanently stunted. Hungry kids cannot learn or grow thus negatively impacting their lives. A significant driver of the problem is that market intermediaries make food too expensive for low-income families. Food For Education provides subsidized nutritious meals to primary school children to improve nutrition and education outcomes. They focus on quality and nutrition rather than just high caloric intake. Each serving contains 650 grams of legumes and vegetables, effectively packing two meals into one to guarantee 70% of a child’s recommended daily intake (RDI). They also target at least 40% of calories from protein – double the amount that can be found in existing feeding programs. Food4Education feeds ~30K students daily.

Kitchen operations are at the core of Food For Education’s ability to deliver high-quality, nutritious meals to children every day. The team has built a culture that values and ensures quality, good tasting food allowing kitchen managers to adjust recipes to meet different needs. However, the Food For Education team recognized the need to monitor the cost per meal as is a critical metric for their model.  They partnered with Ana Garcia and the Rippleworks team to review current kitchen operations and KPIs,  learn and practice efficiency principles and develop an implementation plan for their new processes.
